A Note from Candis Kloverstrom

Denver Men in the Kitchen is about some of the most successful and interesting men in Denver who happen to like to cook. It's also a celebration of these men.

I decided to put together a composite picture of some of the guys who are using their talents both at work and at home. Their homes are where they have taken on one of the most challenging roles there is: creating and sharing dishes, i.e., providing for others, delighting others, sharing of themselves. To me this is a huge undertaking and a leap for many men.

This book is also why the men do what they do, which is cook. The reasons they cook, I found, are endless. They range from needing to escape and relax, to wanting to perfect their grill-meister skills, to serving as the sole family chef, to being a single parent, to occasionally dabbling in the kitchen just because it's fun. And they all are proud of their dishes, no matter the motivation.

I interviewed each man selected for the book. That is 57 of them. I met them outside their work environments, went beyond the business suits and the titles to look into their lives and create a more accurate picture of today's successful guy. I collected the recipes, photographs, and the education of a lifetime. I was truly impressed.

The word success keeps cropping up. Sure, there's success at work, but how about success in keeping the home fires burning? Traditionally, we have thought of the male as being the conqueror, the one who provides, and the one who is out on the front line sometimes battling to keep food on the table. I believe there has not been enough emphasis on the importance of the man in the home and the part he plays in keeping all intact. Truth be known, the men who expend effort on building home fires are the ones who also find home fires the warmest.

Looking at what I found developing this book, I saw other themes: creativity, caring for others, and most importantly, making wise choices. Small, everyday choices that create who we are...choices that influence future events and leave a legacy for future generations. Our families, our health, and our happiness are impacted by those choices.
